Activity based working: definition and advantages

Activity-based working is one of the concepts that emerged with hybrid work. But what is it? What benefits can companies get from it? Discover the definition.

What is activity based working?

The concept of activity-based working was born a little over twenty years ago. It was a Dutch consultant, Erik Veldhoen, who first described the term in his book The Demise of the Office. It is a way of working where employees choose the most suitable work space to accomplish their tasks.

Employees all perform different activities in their daily lives and each task has its own characteristics: with activity based working, employees select the working environment to perform their tasks in the best conditions, and this is done in the company's offices or outside.

What are the advantages of activity based working?

Optimization of work spaces

Activity-based working allows employees to take advantage of a wider variety of work spaces:

  • internally, with the implementation of the flex office, which reduces the number of individual offices, creating new work options (meeting room, concentration area, etc.);
  • externally, with the opening of other work environments that are not available in the office, offering more possibilities to employees (and reducing costs for the company).

More productive work

A workspace adapted to the type of activity and work style of each person improves productivity and efficiency in the accomplishment of tasks. Activity-based working also allows employees to adapt their working hours to their activities. This flexibility boosts creativity and well-being at work!

Good to know

89% of French workers believe that the quality of the workplace influences productivity and the ability to concentrate.

Employees who are empowered, confident and valued

The flexibility of activity-based working gives employees a feeling of autonomy, as they can choose their own work space to carry out their tasks (as long as they respect the framework imposed by the employer). This freedom increases the commitment and investment of employees in their missions.

Moreover, as activity based working reduces frustration and stress, it attracts and retains talent looking for a hydrid and modern work environment.

Better collaboration

The variety of work spaces encourages movement: employees cross paths and exchange ideas more easily. These meetings reinforce the feeling of belonging to a team and improve motivation.

The coherence of the work spaces (creative space for brainstorming sessions, video conferencing...) encourages the sharing of knowledge and ideas between the different departments of the company.

Activity-based working has a double objective: it offers greater flexibility to employees and boosts the company's performance.
